Freighter

Definition

Aircraft designed or converted exclusively for cargo transport, without passenger seating.

What Is a Freighter?

A freighter is an aircraft designed from the ground up, or structurally converted from a passenger model, to carry cargo exclusively. Unlike passenger aircraft that carry freight in their lower holds, freighters dedicate their entire fuselage volume — both main deck and lower holds — to cargo. This configuration allows operators to maximize payload capacity and accommodate outsized shipments that would never fit in a conventional airliner's belly.

How It Works

Freighters are equipped with reinforced main-deck floors rated for heavy pallet loads, wide cargo doors on the main deck and often the nose, and an absence of passenger amenities such as seats, galleys, and overhead bins. Cargo is loaded using unit load devices (ULDs) — standardized containers and pallets that slot into roller-equipped floor tracks. Ground crews use high-loaders and conveyor belts to transfer ULDs between the aircraft and the warehouse. The main-deck cargo door is typically located on the forward left or rear left fuselage, swinging outward or upward to reveal a full cross-section opening.

  • Nose-loading: Some designs, like the 747F, hinge the entire nose upward for straight-in loading of full-length cargo.
  • Side door loading: Most narrow-body freighters (737F, A321F) load through a large side door on the main deck.
  • Lower holds: Used for smaller ULDs and bulk cargo that supplements main-deck payload.

Key Aircraft Types

The Boeing 747-8F and 747-400F are the workhorses of long-haul air freight, capable of carrying up to 140 tonnes over intercontinental routes. The Boeing 777F has taken over many ultra-long-haul routes given its twin-engine efficiency. The Airbus A330-200F serves medium-haul markets. In the heavyweight category, the Antonov An-124 handles outsized military and industrial cargo. For regional operations, the Boeing 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) and Airbus A321P2F are widely deployed.

Industry Significance

Dedicated freighters carry roughly 55% of global air cargo by weight, with belly cargo on passenger flights making up the remainder. E-commerce growth — driven by platforms like Amazon, Alibaba, and Shopify — has created sustained demand for freighter capacity. Amazon Air, FedEx Express, UPS Airlines, and DHL Aviation collectively operate hundreds of freighters to meet next-day and same-day delivery commitments. During the COVID-19 pandemic, when passenger flights collapsed, freighters became critical infrastructure for transporting medical supplies and PPE, temporarily commanding extraordinary rates.
