Everything you need to know about packing a carry-on bag — from the liquids rule to size limits — so you breeze through security and board with confidence.
Contents
The Liquid Rule (100ml / 3-1-1)
The most important carry-on rule: all liquids, gels, pastes, and aerosols must be in containers of 100ml (3.4 oz) or less. All containers must fit inside one clear resealable 1-litre plastic bag (roughly 20 × 20 cm). One bag per passenger. Applies to toothpaste, shampoo, sunscreen, lip gloss, and gel-like foods.
- Exempt: Baby formula, breast milk, and prescribed liquid medication with documentation.
- Oversized containers: Even a mostly-empty 500ml bottle doesn't comply — transfer to a travel-size container.
Electronics
Laptops and tablets must be removed from your bag and placed flat in a separate tray at security. Power banks are only allowed in carry-on luggage — they're prohibited in checked bags due to fire risk.
- Power banks: Up to 100Wh without approval; 100–160Wh requires airline permission.
- Chargers: Carry a universal adapter for international travel and a short USB cable for in-seat ports.
- Headphones: Pack noise-canceling headphones accessibly — they transform a long flight.
Prohibited Items
- Always banned in carry-on: Knives with blades over 6cm, scissors over 6cm, any firearm or replica, heavy tools over 7 inches (18cm).
- Checked bag only: Full-size liquids (over 100ml), sharp tools, certain sports equipment.
- Allowed: Safety razors, cartridge razors, one disposable lighter (in pocket in the US, not in the bag).
Essentials Checklist
A well-packed carry-on covers you if your checked bag is delayed. Prioritize valuables and items you can't easily replace at your destination.
- Documents: Passport, boarding pass, visa, hotel confirmation, travel insurance.
- Medications: All prescriptions in original packaging, plus a few days' extra supply.
- Electronics: Phone, charger, power bank, headphones.
- Comfort: Travel pillow, eye mask, earplugs, a light layer, refillable water bottle (empty through security).
- Spare clothes: One change in case your checked bag is delayed.
Airline Size Limits
Every airline sets maximum carry-on dimensions. Exceed them and you may be forced to gate-check your bag. The most common limit is approximately 55 × 40 × 20 cm (22 × 16 × 8 inches). Budget airlines are often stricter.
- Measure with wheels and handles extended: That's how screeners measure.
- Personal item: Most airlines also allow a smaller bag under the seat — typically 35 × 25 × 20 cm.
Pro Packing Tips
- Roll clothes: Saves space and reduces wrinkles compared to folding.
- Top-load liquids: Keep the liquids bag accessible for quick removal at security.
- Use packing cubes: Compress clothing and make finding items fast.
- Wear your heaviest items: Heavy shoes and jacket on your body, not in the bag.
- Morning final check: Pack the night before, then re-check for overnight items (charger, toiletries).
