The Airbus A350 XWB (eXtra Wide Body) family includes the A350-900 (325 seats, 15,000 km range) and A350-1000 (366 seats, 16,100 km). The A350F freighter variant is in development. The A350 is 53% composite by weight.
The A350-900 is powered by Rolls-Royce Trent XWB-84 engines with 84,200 lbf thrust, while the A350-1000 uses the more powerful Trent XWB-97 (97,000 lbf). The -1000 is 7 meters longer with redesigned main landing gear and outperforms the Boeing 777-300ER.
Qatar Airways was the launch customer in January 2015 and operates the largest A350 fleet. Other major operators include Singapore Airlines, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Finnair, and Lufthansa. The A350 has rapidly become the preferred aircraft for long-haul fleet renewals.
The Airbus A350-900 first flew on June 14, 2013, and entered service with Qatar Airways on January 15, 2015. It was developed as Airbus's response to the Boeing 787, featuring a carbon fiber fuselage, new wing design, and the most fuel-efficient wide-body engine in service.
