About Boeing 737 MAX 9
Stretched MAX variant replacing the 737-900ER. Gained significant attention after the January 2024 Alaska Airlines door plug blowout incident that led to temporary grounding and enhanced inspections.
Frequently Asked Questions
The Boeing 737 MAX 9 typically seats 178 passengers in a standard two-class configuration. In a high-density single-class layout, it can carry up to 220 passengers. The MAX 9 is positioned as the replacement for the 737-900ER, offering a similar passenger capacity with significantly improved fuel efficiency and range thanks to the LEAP-1B engines and split-tip winglets.
The Boeing 737 MAX 9 has a maximum range of approximately 6,570 km (3,550 nautical miles) with a full passenger load. This represents an improvement of about 650 km over the 737-900ER it replaces. The increased range, combined with the CFM LEAP-1B engines that burn approximately 14% less fuel than the CFM56, opens new nonstop route opportunities for airlines on medium-haul sectors.
The 737 MAX 9 features the Boeing Sky Interior with sculpted sidewalls, modern LED ambient lighting, and larger overhead bins that can accommodate 50% more carry-on bags than the 737 NG. The cabin width is 3.54 m with a standard 3-3 economy arrangement. Many airlines offer a premium domestic first-class cabin with extra legroom. The MAX 9 also features larger windows than the 737 NG, providing improved natural light.
Alaska Airlines is the largest 737 MAX 9 operator in the United States, having ordered the type as a replacement for its 737-900ER fleet. Lion Air Group in Indonesia, Copa Airlines in Panama, and Turkish Airlines are also significant MAX 9 customers. United Airlines operates the MAX 9 alongside the MAX 8 on its domestic and short-haul international network.
The A321neo outsells the 737 MAX 9 significantly, primarily because it offers higher passenger capacity (180-220 seats vs 178-220) and a wider cabin. The A321neo also has extended-range variants (LR and XLR) that can operate transatlantic routes, a capability the MAX 9 does not match. The MAX 9 offers competitive fuel efficiency and lower list price, making it attractive for airlines focused on domestic and short-haul operations where the additional range of the A321LR is unnecessary.
