What Is the Apron?
The apron — also called the ramp — is the paved area of an airport where aircraft are parked between flights to receive passengers, cargo, fuel, catering, and maintenance. It sits between the terminal buildings and the taxiway system, and is the hub of all ground handling activity. The apron is one of the most controlled and potentially hazardous areas on the airport, with a constant flow of aircraft, fuel trucks, baggage carts, catering vehicles, and ground crew all working in close proximity.
How It Works
Aircraft are marshalled into their designated stands by marshallers using illuminated wands, or guided by electronic docking systems (VDGS — Visual Docking Guidance Systems) that display stopping distance and lateral deviation on an illuminated board. Once parked, wheel chocks are placed, engine shutdown is confirmed, and multiple ground service teams converge simultaneously — refuellers, cleaners, caterers, baggage handlers, and maintenance technicians — to prepare the aircraft for its next departure as quickly as possible. Jet bridges swing out from the terminal to connect directly to the aircraft door.
Types and Standards
- Contact stands: Adjacent to the terminal building; served by jet bridges for direct boarding.
- Remote stands: Away from the terminal; passengers board via buses and airstairs.
- Cargo apron: Dedicated area for freighter aircraft loading and unloading, often equipped with wide vehicle access.
- General aviation apron: Separate area for private and business aircraft, usually adjacent to the FBO.
Apron surfaces must withstand the PCN (Pavement Classification Number) loads of the largest aircraft using them. Changi Airport's apron is designed to handle concurrent A380 operations on multiple adjacent stands.
Interesting Facts
- Heathrow's Terminal 5 apron was engineered specifically for A380 operations, with extra-wide taxilanes and reinforced pavement capable of handling the aircraft's 575-tonne MTOW.
- Dubai International's apron covers over 5 km² — one of the largest in the world — reflecting the airport's role as a global hub for Emirates and flydubai.
- Fuel hydrant pits are buried beneath many modern aprons, eliminating the need for fuel bowser trucks and speeding up the turnaround process.
- Apron speed limits are typically 25 km/h or less; collisions between ground vehicles and aircraft on the apron are classified as serious incidents.
