  • Contact: Using the boom or probe-and-drogue system, physical connection is made and fuel flow begins. Transfer rates range from 500–6,000 lb per minute depending on system type.
  • Disconnect: Once the required fuel quantity is transferred, the connection is broken and the receiver clears the tanker.

Receiver aircraft must be certified for aerial refueling, which requires structural reinforcement of the receptacle or probe area and the installation of fuel system plumbing to the main tanks.

Almost all modern USAF combat aircraft — F-15, F-16, F-22, F-35A, B-1B, B-2, B-52 — are equipped with aerial refueling receptacles for the flying boom system.
