Бывший пассажирский самолёт, конструктивно переоборудованный для использования в качестве специализированного грузового.
What Is a Converted Freighter (P2F)?
A converted freighter — formally designated a Passenger-to-Freighter (P2F) conversion — is a commercial passenger aircraft that has been removed from passenger service and structurally modified to operate as a dedicated cargo aircraft. The conversion process removes all passenger cabin furnishings and systems, reinforces the main-deck floor for cargo loads, installs a main-deck cargo door, adds roller floor systems and cargo restraint hardware, and modifies fuel and electrical systems as required. P2F conversions are a critical source of affordable freighter capacity in the air cargo market.
How It Works
A P2F conversion is a major structural modification requiring an STC (Supplemental Type Certificate) from aviation authorities. The process typically takes 60–120 days in a maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) facility and involves:
- Cabin stripping: Removal of seats, overhead bins, galleys, lavatories, insulation, and passenger lighting systems.
- Floor reinforcement: Installation of a new main-deck cargo floor capable of supporting pallet and container loads far exceeding passenger weight.
- Cargo door installation: Cutting a large opening in the fuselage and fitting a reinforced cargo door with seals and structural doublers to maintain airworthiness.
- Cargo systems: Installation of powered or passive roller floor tracks, side guide rails, and cargo restraint systems (nets, locks).
Key Aircraft Types
The Boeing 737-800BCF (Boeing Converted Freighter) is one of the most popular narrow-body P2F conversions, widely used by Amazon Air and low-cost cargo operators. The Airbus A321P2F converts aging A321ceos into efficient narrow-body freighters. In the widebody segment, the Boeing 767-300BDSF and 767-300F conversions serve major integrators including DHL and UPS. The Boeing 777-300ERSF (Special Freighter) conversion, performed by Israel Aerospace Industries, creates a high-capacity widebody freighter from retired 777-300ERs — one of the most valuable P2F programs given the 777-300ER's enormous lower hold and main-deck volume.
Industry Significance
P2F conversions are economically attractive because the base airframe cost is a fraction of a new-build freighter. As e-commerce demand drove explosive freighter capacity requirements, conversion programs accelerated rapidly after 2018. The COVID-19 pandemic further accelerated retirements of passenger widebodies — creating a large pool of conversion candidates. MRO facilities in China, Israel, Singapore, and Germany have expanded P2F conversion lines to meet demand. The P2F market is also environmentally relevant: converting rather than scrapping aircraft extends their economic life and defers the carbon cost of manufacturing new aircraft.
