Airbus A320neo

32N A20N In Production

Introduced as the New Engine Option upgrade of the A320, the A320neo pairs the proven single-aisle airframe with CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1127G geared turbofans to cut fuel burn by around 20 percent. Two-class seating is about 150, with up to 194 in a single-class layout, and range reaches roughly 6,300 km at a 828 km/h cruise. Since its 2014 first flight the type has drawn more than 9,000 orders, making the neo family the most successful commercial aircraft program by order volume. Measuring 37.6 metres long on a 35.8-metre wingspan with a maximum takeoff weight of 79,000 kg, it forms the core of modern short- and medium-haul fleets across the globe.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Airbus A320neo typically seats 150 passengers in a two-class layout, identical to its predecessor the A320ceo. Maximum single-class capacity is 194 passengers with Airbus Cabin Flex configuration. The cabin dimensions are unchanged from the A320-200, maintaining the same 3.70 m width and 3-3 seating in economy.
The Airbus A320neo has a maximum range of approximately 6,300 km (3,400 nautical miles), about 200 km more than the A320-200 it replaces. This extended range is achieved through the new engine option (neo) — either the CFM LEAP-1A or Pratt & Whitney PW1100G-JM geared turbofan. These engines deliver 15-20% lower fuel consumption compared to the previous generation.
The A320neo and 737 MAX 8 are fierce competitors with similar passenger capacity (150-189 seats). The A320neo offers a wider cabin by 16 cm, while the 737 MAX 8 has a slightly longer range at 6,570 km versus 6,300 km. The A320neo gives airlines a choice of two engine manufacturers (CFM or Pratt & Whitney), whereas the MAX 8 exclusively uses the CFM LEAP-1B.
The A320neo is most easily distinguished from the A320ceo by its larger engine nacelles, which are visibly wider in diameter. Aircraft equipped with Pratt & Whitney PW1100G engines have a distinctive shorter nacelle with a larger fan diameter. All A320neos feature sharklet wingtip devices as standard. The fuselage length and overall shape remain identical to the A320-200.
The abbreviation neo stands for new engine option, referring to the next-generation engines available on the aircraft. Airbus launched the A320neo program in December 2010, and the first delivery to Lufthansa took place in January 2016. The neo family (A319neo, A320neo, A321neo) has become the fastest-selling aircraft program in history, surpassing 9,000 orders within a decade of its launch.
