France's flag carrier fleet spanning the A220 to the A350.
Contents
Fleet Overview
Air France operates approximately 220 aircraft as France's flag carrier and a founding member of the SkyTeam alliance. Based at Paris Charles de Gaulle Airport (CDG), Air France connects Paris to over 300 destinations through a combination of mainline long-haul, medium-haul, and short-haul operations. Air France is part of Air France-KLM Group, which collectively operates over 500 aircraft with KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. The group also controls Transavia France (low-cost) and holds stakes in Kenya Airways and other carriers.
Long-Haul Widebody Fleet
Air France's intercontinental network is served by approximately 100 widebody aircraft:
- Boeing 777-200ER/300ER: ~65 aircraft, the dominant long-haul type. Routes include CDG–New York JFK (operated with up to 5 daily frequencies), CDG–Los Angeles, CDG–São Paulo, CDG–Tokyo Narita, CDG–Johannesburg
- Airbus A350-900: ~20 aircraft delivered, fleet growing. New flagship product on CDG–Bogotá, CDG–Montréal, CDG–Seoul, CDG–Tokyo Haneda
- Airbus A380-800: ~9 aircraft (reduced from 12), operated on CDG–New York JFK, CDG–Los Angeles, CDG–Dubai, CDG–Washington Dulles
Medium-Haul A330 Fleet
Air France operates approximately 15 Airbus A330-200 aircraft on medium-to-long-haul routes, particularly to the French overseas territories (Martinique, Guadeloupe, La Réunion, French Guiana) and Africa (CDG–Abidjan, CDG–Dakar, CDG–Nairobi). The A330 connects metropolitan France with its overseas departments in a role combining domestic and international service. These aircraft typically seat around 224 passengers in a three-class configuration.
Short-Haul European Fleet
Air France's intra-European and domestic French network relies on approximately 80 Airbus A320 family aircraft (A318, A319, A320, A321) plus legacy A318s being retired. The short-haul fleet connects CDG and Lyon (LYS) to European business destinations including London, Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Madrid, and Rome. Air France has faced significant criticism for continuing to operate short-haul routes where direct TGV high-speed rail service exists — French environmental legislation passed in 2021 banned domestic flights under 2.5 hours where rail alternatives exist, eliminating routes like Paris–Bordeaux and Paris–Lyon.
Airbus A220 Arrival
Air France has placed orders for 60 Airbus A220-300 aircraft, with deliveries beginning in 2021. The A220-300 seats 148 passengers in a 2-3 configuration and is replacing aging A318s and A319s on thinner European routes. The A220 offers 25% lower fuel consumption per seat than the A318 it replaces. Air France has been praised for being an early A220 adopter among major European legacy carriers.
Fleet Future and Sustainability
Air France has publicly committed to retiring its A380 fleet by 2027 and has cancelled remaining A380 deliveries. The airline is accelerating A350-900 deliveries to replace 777-200ERs on North American and Asian routes. Air France-KLM Group has ordered up to 60 Airbus A321XLR aircraft (for Air France and Transavia) to address the medium-haul market efficiently. The group has set a target to reduce CO2 emissions per passenger-km by 30% by 2030 versus 2019.
