Fleet Overview
Cathay Pacific is Hong Kong's flag carrier and one of Asia's premier long-haul airlines, operating approximately 220 aircraft to over 100 destinations. Based at Hong Kong International Airport (HKG), Cathay's hub position between Greater China, Southeast Asia, and long-haul intercontinental markets is a core strategic asset. The airline is a member of the oneworld alliance alongside British Airways, American Airlines, and Qantas. Cathay Pacific Holdings also controls regional carrier Cathay Dragon (formerly Dragonair, ceased operations 2020) and budget airline HK Express.
A350 Fleet
Cathay Pacific is one of the world's largest A350 operators, with approximately 48 A350-900 and A350-1000 aircraft forming the backbone of its long-haul network. The A350-1000 — of which Cathay was the second customer after Qatar Airways — operates ultra-long-haul routes including HKG–New York JFK (16.5 hours), HKG–London Heathrow (13.5 hours), and HKG–Boston. The A350-900 covers medium-long-haul routes including HKG–Sydney, HKG–Tokyo, HKG–Singapore, and HKG–Melbourne. Cathay has ordered additional A350s with deliveries expected through 2026.
Boeing 777 Fleet
Cathay Pacific operates approximately 50 Boeing 777 aircraft across the 777-200, 777-200ER, 777-300, and 777-300ER variants. The 777-300ER is the primary widebody for high-frequency routes including HKG–San Francisco, HKG–Los Angeles, HKG–Frankfurt, and HKG–Bangkok. Older 777-200 and 777-300 classic variants (non-ER) serve high-frequency short-haul Asian routes including HKG–Taipei, HKG–Shanghai, and HKG–Beijing.
Regional Fleet
Following the collapse of Cathay Dragon in 2020 (a COVID-related decision to close the subsidiary), Cathay Pacific absorbed many regional routes directly. The remaining regional feed is handled by HK Express (Airbus A320/321) and through codeshare agreements with other carriers. Cathay Pacific itself does not operate a narrowbody fleet for mainline services.
Cabin Product Renewal
Cathay Pacific launched a comprehensive cabin renewal program beginning in 2022. The new Business Class product — "Aria Suite" — features a fully enclosed private suite with sliding doors, direct aisle access, and a 1-2-1 configuration. First Class on A350-1000 aircraft features 6 private suites per aircraft with 76-inch flat beds. Premium Economy was refreshed with wider seats and a 38-inch pitch. The new Economy Class features a lower headrest and updated seat design. Cathay is retrofitting new cabins across its A350 fleet through 2025.
Future Fleet Plans
Cathay Pacific has announced orders for 30 Airbus A330-900neo aircraft to supplement the A350 on medium-haul routes and replace aging 777 classics, with deliveries from 2024. The airline has also placed a letter of intent for 30 Boeing 777-9s for future long-haul widebody replacement. Cathay's recovery post-pandemic has been shaped by Hong Kong's travel restrictions (some of the world's longest-lasting), and the airline is aggressively rebuilding its network to pre-COVID levels by targeting new routes to the US, Middle East, and South Asia.
