Recline angle refers to how far a seat back can tilt rearward from its upright position. It is expressed either as degrees from vertical or as the number of inches the top of the seatback travels rearward. Recline directly trades comfort for the passenger reclining against the knee space of the passenger seated behind — making it one of the most contentious topics in cabin design and a persistent source of in-flight passenger conflict at tight seat pitch settings.
How Recline Is Measured and Regulated
Airlines specify recline in terms of the backward travel of the seatback top (typically 2–8 inches in economy) or angle (typically 5–18 degrees in economy, up to 180 degrees for fully flat beds). The FAA requires seats to be in the upright position during takeoff and landing because a reclined seatback:
- Increases brace position effectiveness in a crash — the passenger behind cannot properly brace if the seatback is in their lap.
- Potentially obstructs emergency egress if seats are jammed rearward during a rapid deceleration event.
- May prevent deployment of tray tables and interfere with passenger exit from the row ahead.
Seats must return to fully upright before descent below 10,000 feet, during taxi, and for takeoff. This is enforced by flight attendants as part of the pre-departure and pre-landing safety checks.

- Standard recline (economy): 3–5 inches backward travel. Creates the classic conflict at 30-inch pitch seats.
- Pre-reclined seat: The seatback is fixed at a permanently angled position (e.g., 5–7 degrees from vertical) but cannot move. Used by some LCCs and on short-haul routes; reduces conflict while eliminating additional comfort for the reclining passenger.
- Recaro SL3510 "Pivot" recline: The seat pan slides forward as the back tilts, allowing the reclining passenger to recline without encroaching on the passenger behind's space. Increasingly adopted on narrow-body aircraft.
- Lie-flat business/first class: Reclines from upright (roughly 15 degrees from vertical) to fully flat (180 degrees — completely horizontal). The transition mechanism can be motorized (controlled by the passenger) or manual.

JetBlue's Mint business class on the Airbus A321LR offers fully lie-flat seats at 180 degrees with direct aisle access from every seat in a 1-1 staggered layout.
