A mid-size member of the Dash 8 family, the De Havilland Canada Q300 is a twin-engine turboprop seating about 50 passengers, up to 56. Two Pratt & Whitney PW123 engines give a cruise of 528 km/h and a range near 1,558 km. First flown in 1987, the aircraft is 25.7 metres long with a maximum takeoff weight of 19,505 kg. Its 'Q' designation marks the active noise and vibration suppression system fitted to the type, which significantly reduced cabin noise, a longstanding drawback of turboprop travel. The Q300 served short regional and commuter routes where its size and low operating cost suited low-density markets.
