What Is Cruise Speed?

Cruise speed is the airspeed selected for the main en-route portion of a flight, balancing fuel efficiency, travel time, and structural limits. It is not a fixed value but a range within which pilots and flight management systems optimize based on cost index — a measure of how the airline weighs the cost of time against the cost of fuel. At low cost index, the aircraft flies slower to minimize fuel burn; at high cost index, it flies faster to reduce time costs (crew, leasing, slot utilization). For jet transports, cruise speed is expressed in Mach number rather than knots above approximately FL280, because aerodynamic compressibility effects depend on the speed of sound rather than absolute airspeed.

How It Is Measured

Cruise speed is expressed in three ways: Indicated Airspeed (IAS) in knots as shown on the cockpit instrument, True Airspeed (TAS) corrected for altitude and temperature, and Mach number as a fraction of the local speed of sound. The relationship between these varies with altitude: at FL350 on a standard day, Mach 0.85 equates to approximately 490 knots TAS (900 km/h) but only about 250 knots IAS. Long-range cruise (LRC) speed is defined as the speed delivering 99% of maximum range — typically 3–5% faster than maximum range speed with minimal range penalty. Maximum cruise speed (VMO/MMO) is a structural limit that must not be exceeded.
