What Is Ancillary Revenue?
Ancillary revenue is income generated by an airline from sources other than the base airfare — the charges levied for seat selection, checked baggage, priority boarding, in-flight food and beverages, hotel or car-hire commissions, travel insurance, loyalty programme miles sold to banks and retailers, onboard duty-free sales, and a growing range of digital and destination services. Once a minor supplement to ticket revenue, ancillary revenue has become a structural pillar of airline economics, particularly for low-cost carriers, where total ancillary receipts can exceed the base fare on many routes.
How It Works
Airlines unbundle the air travel product into individually priced components and use dynamic pricing and personalisation algorithms to maximise revenue from each. A passenger who buys a headline fare of £15 Stansted–Barcelona may ultimately spend £60 once bags, seat selection, priority boarding, and a sandwich are added. Legacy carriers have adopted this model selectively — charging for checked bags on economy fares, premium seat selection, and loyalty mile sales — while maintaining bundled premium cabin products. Frequent flyer programme miles sold to credit card partners have become particularly valuable: United Airlines' MileagePlus programme was valued at over $20 billion — several times the value of the airline itself — demonstrating the financial leverage of ancillary streams.
Types and Standards
- À-la-carte fees: Bags, seat upgrades, priority services — direct charges to the passenger.
- Commission-based: Hotel, car, travel insurance sold through the airline's website on a referral or commission basis.
- Frequent flyer miles: Sold to financial institutions and retailers; the most profitable ancillary category for full-service carriers.
- Advertising and media: In-flight magazine advertising, sponsored destination content, onboard media.
Interesting Facts
- Ryanair generates over 30% of total revenue from ancillary sources — one of the highest ratios in the industry.
- Spirit Airlines' ancillary revenue per passenger has exceeded the base fare revenue per passenger — the airline effectively treats the seat as a loss leader.
- The global airline industry's total ancillary revenue reached approximately $102 billion in 2022, up from under $10 billion in 2008, according to IdeaWorksCompany research.
- Delta's SkyMiles programme — including the AmEx co-brand card revenue — generated over $5 billion in revenue in 2022, more than many standalone airlines.
